This can occur when files are either removed or become unregistered usually
due to another program on the pc. To fix this issue:
click start, run type in the following: regsvr32 wuapi.dll, click ok
repeat the regsvr32 command for the following files:
wups.dll
wuaueng.dll
wucltui.dll
atl.dll
MSXML3.dll

Reboot your machine when completed and try Windows Update again.
