"ERROR: ACCESS DENIED" WINDOWS UPDATE

First off you need admin. rights to access the registry, generally when
you recieve this error it means the admin. of your network set it up this
way on purpose. If you are in fact the admin, you can remove this restriction
by doing the following:
- click start, run.., type in 'regedit' click ok
- go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
  WindowsUpdate
- look in the right pane for DWORD "DisableWindowsUpdateAccess" change the
  entry to 0 OR delete the entry.

Alternatively, for Windows XP Professional users only, you can use group
policy editor:
- click start, run.., type in 'gpedit.msc' click ok
- go to User Configuration\Adminsrative Templates\Windows Components\
  Windows Update\
- double-click "Remove access to all Windows Update Features", set it to
  disabled
