Programs Don't Keep Your Machine Secure, Knowledge Does

I've noticed a scary trend lately. It seems as though the average joe-bob user believes that using <x> program will keep them safe from any threat on the internet and that they are safe to do whatever they want to as long as <x> program is running. This couldn't be further from the truth..

As stated above, Users are way to dependent on programs to keep their machine secure, while programs do help, they still need user knowledge to function. Saying <x> program will keep your machine secure is roughly like saying I have a security alarm on my car it is safe from thieves, yes it may help but its still possible to get stolen.

Commercials don't help either. With recent advertisements of AOL giving you the belief that their service is more secure than others. When in fact the only thing that is bundled is a anti virus product, and a SpyZapper that gets what 3 VERY COMMON spyware programs out of the 1,000s out there. This kind of advertising needs to cease, because its not helping anyone.

In order for a machine to be secure, a user needs to understand how the program works. While many programs have automated functions, they won't save you all the time. Users need to learn how to use and update their anti malware products, learn how a firewall works, and understand the threats of the online world.
